Bugaboo Math Games

Play “store” with your child to practice counting and working with coins and dollars. Your child can be the cashier, with some real dollars and coins. If they have a pretend cash register, it’s even more fun! Set some items around the room with low prices on them and go “shopping”.  Your child will have to ring up your purchase, count your money, and give you the correct change. Based on your child’s age, the prices and types of bills can be higher for a greater challenge.

Baking for the holidays? Have your child help and work with fractions at the same time! For example, use a 1/4 measuring cup to show how many times you refill it to make 1 cup, or show how many 1/2 cups are in 2 cups. Talk as you’re filling the cups so your child has a good visual of the different sizes and how two 1/2 cups equal 1, etc.

Children love guessing games so turn your next game into a math challenge by saying something like, “I am thinking of a number, and when you add 4 to it, you get 9.  What is my number?”  Then have your child make up a challenge for you! Change the difficulty level based on your child’s math ability.

Using coins, count with your child to show how many ways you can make 10 with pennies.  Then, work together to use the pennies to show addition and subtraction concepts. For example, “You have 10 pennies, and I take 3 away. Let’s count the number of pennies left.”
